Porur–Poonamallee metro stations get safety barrier gates

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has installed safety barrier gates at the Porur and Poonamallee metro stations along the Poonamallee–Porur stretch of the Phase II corridor as part of efforts to enhance passenger safety ahead of the start of services on this section.

The barrier gates — also referred to as platform screen doors — are designed to prevent commuters from inadvertently falling onto the tracks. These doors remain closed and only open once a metro train has arrived and stopped at the platform, significantly reducing the risk of track-related accidents.

The Poonamallee–Porur corridor, which is part of Chennai Metro’s Phase II expansion, has seen rapid progress with construction nearly complete and safety systems being put in place. Train operations on this elevated stretch are expected to begin soon, with authorities previously indicating a likely January 2026 launch for passenger services.

The installation of safety doors reflects CMRL’s focus on modern infrastructure and commuter protection, aligning the new elevated stations with enhanced safety standards already in place in underground metro sections.
