M. K. Stalin on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a 13.5-km four-lane elevated corridor from Thiruvanmiyur to Uthandi along the East Coast Road (ECR). The project will be executed at an estimated cost of ₹2,100 crore.
The foundation ceremony was held near the Marundeeswarar Temple in Thiruvanmiyur, in the presence of Highways Minister E. V. Velu and senior officials.
The proposed elevated corridor is aimed at easing congestion on the busy ECR stretch, which sees nearly 70,000 vehicles daily. Though the road has been widened to six lanes, traffic movement remains slow due to vehicles entering from around 130 connecting side roads, especially from residential neighbourhoods.
Officials said the elevated facility will allow motorists to bypass traffic signals and reduce travel time significantly. The project is expected to be completed within three years.
Once operational, the corridor is anticipated to streamline traffic flow and strengthen connectivity along Chennai’s coastal belt.
