The safety inspection of the Vadapalani–Poonamallee Metro corridor has been successfully completed, paving the way for the commencement of commercial operations. The new stretch is likely to be opened to the public in March, subject to approval from the Railway Board.
The corridor forms part of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) network and is expected to significantly enhance connectivity in the city’s western suburbs.
In the initial phase, ten trains are expected to operate along the new stretch. Services will run at a frequency of seven minutes between Porur and Poonamallee Bypass, with alternate services terminating at Porur to streamline operations.
Passengers accessing Phase II services at Vadapalani will be able to use the existing Phase I station for seamless connectivity.
With the mandatory safety inspection now complete, the new corridor is set to improve public transport access, reduce travel time, and help ease traffic congestion in key western corridors of Chennai.
