The Tamil Nadu government has unveiled an ambitious proposal to integrate Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) with the city’s existing MRTS elevated rail network, in a move aimed at transforming Chennai’s urban mobility landscape.
The proposed integration seeks to ensure seamless connectivity between Metro and MRTS corridors, allowing passengers to switch between systems with greater ease. The plan includes modernisation of MRTS stations, infrastructure upgrades, improved passenger amenities, and the introduction of unified ticketing and better last-mile connectivity. Authorities have indicated that the revamped facilities will be developed to meet international standards.
Officials expect the integration project to be completed by 2029. Once operational, the unified network is projected to significantly reduce travel time, improve commuter convenience, and strengthen Chennai’s public transport backbone, supporting the city’s growing population and expanding urban footprint.
