The Southern Railway has announced that a high-speed trial run will be conducted on the Velachery–St. Thomas Mount elevated rail corridor on March 5, marking a key step before the commencement of regular train services.
According to railway officials, the trial run will be held from 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM. During this period, trains will operate at higher speeds to assess track strength, signalling systems, overhead electrical equipment, and overall operational readiness. The test is aimed at ensuring that the elevated stretch meets all required safety and technical standards.
The public has been strictly advised not to approach or cross the railway tracks during the trial hours. Railway authorities have stressed that trespassing could be dangerous, especially during high-speed testing, and necessary safety arrangements will be in place along the route.
Regular passenger services on the Velachery–St Thomas Mount stretch are scheduled to begin on March 10, a development expected to significantly improve suburban rail connectivity and ease commuting within Chennai.
