EPS Flies to Delhi for Seat-Sharing Talks

AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami is set to depart for the national capital today, March 19, for a pivotal meeting with the BJP’s top leadership to finalize seat-sharing arrangements for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. This visit is viewed as a mission of critical importance, as the Election Commission has already set the polling date for April 23, leaving very little time for parties to mobilize their ground-level campaigns. Palaniswami is scheduled to meet with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to iron out the final details regarding constituency allocations, specifically addressing urban seats where both parties have overlapping interests.
The negotiations come at a time of heightened political tension, with the AIADMK seeking to retain its dominance within the alliance while accommodating the BJP’s demand for a more significant footprint in the state. Sources indicate that while the AIADMK intends to contest a lion’s share of the 234 seats to ensure a clear path to the Chief Minister’s chair, the BJP is pushing for a double-digit allocation that reflects its perceived growth in the region. This trip marks Palaniswami’s second visit to Delhi this month, signaling that both parties are eager to present a united front and end the speculation surrounding their partnership.
Upon the successful conclusion of today’s talks, the political focus will shift back to Chennai, where the formal alliance declaration is expected to take place. Union Minister Piyush Goyal is slated to arrive in the city on Friday to join Palaniswami in officially announcing the seat-sharing pact. This development will set the stage for a high-octane battle against the ruling DMK-led alliance and the newly entered TVK, as the state moves toward a single-phase election that will determine the next five years of Tamil Nadu’s governance.
