The Tamil Nadu political landscape is in mourning following the death of Siva Dileepan, a dedicated volunteer of the May 17 Movement. Dileepan had been battling for his life in a hospital after a tragic incident at Chennai’s Park Railway Station on March 11, where he jumped in front of a speeding train as a symbolic act of protest against the alleged imposition of Hindi by the Central Government.
Chief Minister MK Stalin released a heartfelt statement expressing his deep condolences to Dileepan’s family and the May 17 Movement founder, Thirumurugan Gandhi. Stalin praised Dileepan’s passion for the Tamil language but urged the youth of the state to refrain from taking such extreme steps. He emphasized that the protection of Tamil identity must be fought through intellect, technology, and peaceful resolve rather than the loss of precious lives.
The Chief Minister noted that while the history of Tamil Nadu is rooted in the language struggle, the modern era demands innovative methods of protest. “What will happen to our language if we lose our lives?” Stalin questioned, reiterating that the state government remains committed to defending Tamil rights through constitutional and democratic means.
