Chennai, May 29:
The Greater Chennai Corporation has made it mandatory for all bulk waste generators to complete online registration under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, which came into force on April 1, 2026. The regulations follow an official notification issued by the Government of India on January 28, 2026.
As per the new guidelines, buildings with a total area of 20,000 square meters or more, establishments consuming over 40,000 litres of water per day, or entities generating 100 kilograms or more of solid waste daily will be classified as bulk waste generators. This includes a wide range of institutions such as commercial establishments, residential welfare associations, hotels, hospitals, educational institutions, IT parks, marriage halls, markets, and factories.
Authorities have instructed all eligible entities within city limits to register online within 15 days of receiving notice from zonal officials. The civic body has warned that strict action will be taken against those who fail to comply within the stipulated timeframe.
In addition to registration, bulk waste generators must ensure proper segregation of waste, procure appropriate bins, and hand over waste only to the Corporation or its authorised agencies. Organic waste generated on-site must be processed within the premises through composting or bio-gas methods, as part of efforts to promote sustainable waste management practices.
