Chennai, Apr 23:

Polling commenced across Tamil Nadu on Thursday amid elaborate security arrangements and heightened political anticipation, as over 5.73 crore voters began casting their ballots in one of the State’s most closely watched elections.

Voting is being held in more than 75,000 polling stations spread across all constituencies, with authorities ensuring the availability of basic amenities and accessibility for voters. The electorate includes 2.80 crore men, 2.93 crore women, and 7,728 third-gender voters, reflecting a broad and inclusive democratic participation.

Significantly, 1.21 crore young voters aged between 18 and 29 are expected to play a decisive role.

Security has been intensified across the State, with nearly 1.5 lakh police personnel and around 23,000 paramilitary forces deployed. Over 5,500 sensitive polling booths are under close watch, while surveillance has been stepped up in more than 6,300 vulnerable locations. Quick response teams and senior police officials have been stationed to address any contingencies.

A total of 4,023 candidates, including a record 443 women, are in the fray, making the contest one of the largest in Tamil Nadu’s electoral history.

The electoral battle, traditionally dominated by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, has evolved into a multi-cornered contest this time. Actor-turned-politician Vijay is making his electoral debut with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, while Seeman continues to expand his base through the Naam Tamilar Katchi.
In addition, V. K. Sasikala has entered the fray with the All India Puratchi Thalaivi Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, further intensifying the contest.

Polling is proceeding under tight vigil, with officials expressing confidence in conducting a peaceful, free, and fair election. The outcome is expected to have significant implications for the State’s political trajectory, with results keenly awaited.
