Chennai, Apr 30:

The proposed integration of the Mass Rapid Transit System with Chennai Metro Rail Limited has reached a crucial final stage, marking a significant milestone for public transport in Chennai. The move is expected to transform urban mobility by bringing multiple rail systems under a unified operational framework.

Southern Railway has forwarded the final draft of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), submitted by Chennai Metro, to the Railway Board for approval. Once cleared, the agreement is likely to be signed in June 2026, after which the takeover process of MRTS operations by Chennai Metro is expected to begin.

The integration will allow seamless coordination between metro and suburban rail services, addressing long-standing issues such as poor connectivity and fragmented operations. Commuters are expected to benefit from reduced travel time, improved frequency, and better last-mile connectivity across key corridors in the city.

Officials believe the move will also streamline infrastructure management and enhance service efficiency, paving the way for future expansions. With this development, Chennai is set to move closer to a modern, integrated urban transit system designed to meet the needs of its growing population.
