Chennai, May 23:

A modern multi-level parking facility has been inaugurated at Chennai Egmore Railway Station, aimed at improving passenger convenience and easing traffic congestion in one of the city’s busiest transit hubs.

Railway officials said the facility is part of the ongoing ₹842 crore redevelopment project, launched in February 2024, to transform Egmore into a future-ready railway station capable of handling growing passenger volumes over the coming decades. The project includes major infrastructure upgrades such as new foot overbridges, platform expansion, and roof renovation works, which are progressing in phases.

The newly opened parking complex, located on Gandhi-Irwin Road, is equipped with advanced features and significant capacity. The second and third floors together can accommodate 122 cars and 68 two-wheelers, while the fourth floor provides space for an additional 62 cars and 34 two-wheelers. The design is intended to reduce roadside parking and streamline traffic flow around the station.

In line with sustainable urban initiatives, the facility includes 22 electric vehicle charging stations, along with 24-hour CCTV surveillance, fire safety systems, paid restrooms, driver rest areas, and smart locker services for passengers. Officials noted that another multi-level parking structure is also being developed on the Poonamallee High Road side, which will further enhance parking capacity once completed.

Urban planners say such infrastructure upgrades contribute to the growth of sustainable homes in Chennai by improving last-mile connectivity, reducing congestion, and encouraging eco-friendly transport options. The Egmore modernisation project is expected to play a key role in shaping a more efficient and sustainable urban environment in the city.
