Chennai, June 16:

Amid increasing reports of power disruptions across Tamil Nadu during the peak summer season, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay held a detailed review meeting with senior officials of the Electricity Department to assess the situation and plan immediate corrective measures.

The discussion focused on managing the rising electricity demand, which has surged due to intense heat conditions across the state. Officials briefed the Chief Minister on current supply constraints and peak load challenges, especially during evening hours.

A key focus of the meeting was ensuring uninterrupted power supply for agricultural activities in the Cauvery delta districts. The Chief Minister reportedly instructed officials to explore measures to provide up to 18 hours of continuous electricity to support kuruvai cultivation, which is highly dependent on timely irrigation and stable power supply.

“The government is committed to ensuring that farmers do not face hardship during the crucial cultivation period,” a senior official said, highlighting the importance of agriculture in the delta region.

Discussions were also held on increasing power generation capacity and improving distribution efficiency to reduce outages. Officials were directed to take immediate steps to stabilize supply and minimize scheduled and unscheduled power cuts.

The Chief Minister also reviewed long-term strategies aimed at strengthening Tamil Nadu’s energy infrastructure, including boosting renewable energy integration and optimizing existing thermal power resources.

With rising demand continuing to strain the grid, the government is expected to roll out further measures in the coming days to ensure stable electricity supply across urban and rural regions.
