Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals with a dramatic 2-1 win over Belgium, thanks to a late goal from substitute Mikel Merino in Los Angeles.
In a tightly contested quarter-final, Spain dominated possession but found it difficult to break down a resilient Belgian side. Fabian Ruiz had earlier given Spain the lead after a well-worked move, but Belgium stayed in the contest with disciplined defending and moments of counter-attacking threat.
The match looked destined for extra time until the 88th minute, when Merino capitalised on a rebound inside the box after a save by Belgium goalkeeper Senne Lammens. The midfielder reacted quickest to slot home the winner, once again proving decisive off the bench for Spain.
Young star Lamine Yamal was instrumental throughout the game, constantly troubling Belgium’s defence with his pace and creativity, though he was unable to find the finishing touch. Spain’s relentless pressure ultimately paid off in the closing stages.
Belgium suffered a major setback when goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was forced off with an apparent injury in what could be his final World Cup appearance.
