Chennai, July 22:

Construction of the ₹5,770-crore Chennai Port–Maduravoyal elevated corridor is being accelerated, with authorities aiming to complete the project by November 2027 after delays caused by the northeast monsoon.

The 21-km corridor, one of the city’s largest infrastructure projects, is designed to decongest traffic by separating freight movement from regular vehicles and improving connectivity between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal.

The stretch from the port to Koyambedu will feature a double-decker structure, with a six-lane upper deck dedicated to container trucks and a four-lane signal-free lower deck for public traffic. Beyond Koyambedu, the corridor will continue as a single-level elevated flyover along Poonamallee High Road up to Maduravoyal.

To enhance accessibility, the project includes 13 ramps—seven entry and six exit points—at key locations such as Koyambedu, Sivananda Salai, Spur Tank Road and College Road. Dedicated access and exit lanes are also planned to ensure smooth merging without disrupting through traffic.

The alignment begins near Gate No.10 of Chennai Port close to Napier Bridge, runs along the Cooum River, passes Koyambedu and terminates at Maduravoyal Junction. Nearly 15 km of the stretch will be double-decker.

Work is currently underway at a major casting yard near Chembarambakkam, where pillars and girders are being manufactured. Girder installation, delayed earlier due to monsoon conditions, has now begun, with construction progressing along the Cooum River. Authorities have extended working hours to 11 hours a day and plan to increase it to 16 hours to fast-track execution.

Once completed, the corridor is expected to handle around 20,000 local vehicles and 5,500 heavy vehicles daily, with traffic projected to exceed 52,000 vehicles by 2047. The project will also support Chennai Port’s cargo capacity target of 200 million tonnes annually, making it a critical link for both urban mobility and freight logistics.
