Chennai, Aug 20:
The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) is planning to transform the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) corridor from Madhya Kailash to Kelambakkam and the Pallavaram–Thoraipakkam Radial Road into modern, international-standard High-Definition (HD) corridors.
The proposed project will focus on improving public transport and road infrastructure along the two busy corridors. The upgrades are expected to include better integration between Metro Rail and bus services, improved pedestrian footpaths and dedicated cycling paths to provide safer and more convenient travel options for commuters.
The project will also feature AI-based traffic signals aimed at improving traffic management and reducing congestion. Smart bus stops equipped with modern passenger facilities are also proposed as part of the corridor development.
In addition, Park-and-Ride facilities are expected to be introduced to encourage commuters to leave their private vehicles at designated locations and shift to public transport.
The proposed improvements are aimed at making the OMR and Pallavaram–Thoraipakkam corridors safer, smarter and more commuter-friendly while strengthening Chennai’s integrated public transport network.
