WELLINGTON, November 6:
New Zealand have suffered a significant setback ahead of the second One-Day International against India, with opener Devon Conway ruled out of the remainder of the series after sustaining a concussion during a training session earlier this week.
The left-handed batter suffered the injury on November 3 following a collision with teammate Matt Henry during a fielding drill ahead of the opening ODI. Conway was subsequently taken to an Accident and Emergency unit at a medical facility in Auckland for assessment.
New Zealand Cricket confirmed on Friday that Conway would not be available for the remaining matches, with left-handed batter Nick Kelly named as his replacement. Kelly, who was initially included in the squad for the fourth and fifth ODIs, is expected to join the squad in Wellington ahead of Saturday’s second match at Sky Stadium.
Henry, who was involved in the collision, has been cleared of concussion and is available for selection, providing some relief to the New Zealand camp.
The change also has implications for New Zealand’s parallel India A assignment. Auckland Aces batter Dale Phillips has been called up to the New Zealand A squad to replace Kelly for the final four-day fixture against India A, which begins on Saturday.
Conway’s absence leaves New Zealand without an experienced opening batter at a crucial stage of the series. His ability to provide stability at the top of the order and build partnerships makes his withdrawal an important consideration for the team’s batting combinations.
India, meanwhile, enter the second ODI with a 1-0 advantage and will look to strengthen their position in the series. The Wellington encounter on November 7 assumes added importance for the hosts, who must adjust their batting line-up while attempting to level the contest.
