Chennai: Metro Rail Safety Commissioner Manoharan today inspected the Chennai DMS-Washermanpet route.

Part of the first phase of the Chennai Metro Rail project, it was completed recently.

The commissioner inspected the track, airflow, signal and other parameters this morning.

Metro service commenced in 2015 after partially opening the first phase of the project. The network consists of two colour-coded lines covering 35 km.

Laying of the lines began in June 2009 and the first stretch, covering seven stations from Koyambedu to Alandur, over a distance of 10 km, began operations 29 June 2015. Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount on the green line and AG-DMK to Chennai Airport on the blue line are commercially operational.

Today’s inspection would open the route from Chennai Airport to Washermanpet.

The phase 2 of the project would cost about Rs 80,000 crore and cover 108 km of the city with 116 stations. Land acquisition is on for phase 2.
