Chennai: Putting an end to uncertainties, the nomination filed by MDMK general secretary Vaiko to contest in Rajya Sabha polls has been accepted by the election officer today.
Following this, Vaiko addressed the press and said, “It is a false statement that MDMK candidates were unhappy with the DMK stating that RS seat would be granted to MDMK only if I contest. The members unanimously agreed to me representing in RS polls.” He added that those who joined MDMK for its ideology have remained loyal. He also said his family members would not enter politics.
Earlier, there were uncertainties prevailing if he would be permitted to contest in Rajya Sabha election following his conviction in a sedition case for his statement supporting the formation of ‘Tamil Eelam’ back in 2009.
Amid the confusion, DMK had fielded the party’s advocate, N R Ilango as the ‘stand-by’, in case Vaiko’s nomination faced rejection. It may be noted that the the special court for MLAs and MPs has suspended the sentence for a month to allow Vaiko to go on appeal in the higher court.
