Eight including medicos, drown in Kanniyakumari beach

What began as a jolly morning trip to the beach in Kanniyakumari to witness the sunrise turned into a harrowing tragedy for eight individuals, including five medical students, belonging to three separate groups. The unfortunate incident occurred on two consecutive days, Sunday and Monday, leaving families devastated and communities mourning.

In the first incident, a group comprising eight students from SRM Medical College, Tiruchy, and KAPV Government Medical College, Tiruchy, embarked on a trip to Nagercoil to attend a marriage function. Among them were P Sarvadharshith, M Praveen Sam, B Gayathri, Venkatesh, D Charukavi, S Neshi, R Preethi Priyanka, and S Saranya, representing a blend of aspirations and dreams from various parts of Tamil Nadu.

On Monday morning, the group ventured to Kanniyakumari beach to witness the enchanting spectacle of the sunrise, a cherished experience for many visitors to the southernmost tip of India. However, tragedy struck when they moved to Lemur beach near Mandaikadu, where playful moments on the shore turned into a nightmare.

Suddenly, a massive wave surged and engulfed all eight individuals, dragging them into the unforgiving depths of the sea. The cries for help echoed, prompting local fishermen to spring into action. Despite their courageous efforts, only three of the group—Neshi, Preethi Priyanka, and Saranya—were rescued from the clutches of the raging sea. The remaining five, tragically, could not be saved.

The rescued individuals were swiftly transported to the Government Medical College Hospital in Asaripallam for urgent medical attention. However, amidst the chaos and grief, the community mourned the loss of five promising lives, cut short by the merciless force of nature. Among the survivors, Neshi’s condition remains critical, while Preethi, Priyanka, and Saranya are on the path to recovery, albeit with emotional scars that may never fully heal.
