More pedestrian plazas to come up in city

The Greater Chennai Corporation has announced ambitious plans to create pedestrian plazas at three additional locations in the city, following the success of the initiative at Pondy Bazaar. The new pedestrian plazas are slated to be developed on Guindy Race Course Road, Thiruvottiyur High Road, and Arunachaleshwar Road in Tondiarpet within the current year.

These plans were unveiled as part of the policy note presented by Minister KN Nehru of the municipal administration and water supply department for the fiscal year 2024–25 in the state legislature on Saturday. The policy note outlines comprehensive efforts to enhance Chennai’s urban infrastructure, focusing on transport infrastructure, green spaces, water management, and parks.

Already underway are efforts to create pedestrian plazas on M C Road and Khader Nawaz Khan Road, reflecting the Corporation’s commitment to improving pedestrian amenities and urban aesthetics across the city.

Minister KN Nehru emphasized the importance of pedestrian-friendly environments and urban rejuvenation in Chennai. “The expansion of pedestrian plazas will not only enhance the safety and convenience of pedestrians but also contribute to the overall beautification of these prominent city roads,” Nehru stated.

In addition to pedestrian plazas, the Corporation’s plans include revamping transport infrastructure to improve connectivity, enhancing green spaces to promote environmental sustainability, implementing effective water management strategies to mitigate urban flooding, and upgrading parks for recreational purposes.

The initiative underscores Chennai’s proactive approach to urban development, aiming to create livable and sustainable urban spaces that cater to the needs of residents and visitors alike. As these projects progress, stakeholders anticipate a positive impact on quality of life, economic vitality, and environmental resilience in the city.
