Passengers staging demonstration at Guduvancherry railway station today.

Chennai: Agitated at fast trains being operated on suburban lines, passengers resorted to rail roko at Guduvancherry today.

EMU services between Chengalpet and Chennai Beach were badly hit.

According to sources, commuters staged protest demanding running of fast local trains on fastlines this morning at Guduvancherry.

Passengers got down the train that started from Chengalpet soon after it halted at the station and sat on the tracks.

Balamurugan, a student who comes to Guindy from Chengalpet, said, “Our train was delayed by 30 minutes. I got into a local train at Chengelpet by 8 am. Thanks to the delay, I reached Guindy after 10 am”, he said.

Stressing the need to run fast local EMUs on fastlines, T Sarath Kumar, a resident of Urapakkam said the running fast locals on suburban lines reduces the speed of trains.

When the local train runs on fastline, I usually take about 25 minutes to reach my workplace at Saidapet by reaching Guindy station from Urapakkam. But after the fast locals began running on suburban lines I now take about 45 minutes.

Southern Railway has reportedly decided to run fast local trains on suburban lines post the recent St Thomas Mount railway station mishap that and that caused dissatisfaction among the travelling populace residing at areas beyond Tambaram like Urapakkam, Perungalathur and Guduvancherry.
