Chennai: A K Bose, a sitting MLA of the ruling AIADMK, died in Madurai today after prolonged illness, police and party sources said.
The 69-year-old is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
Bose represented Thiruparankundram seat in the Tamilnadu Legislative Assembly.
A three-time MLA, Bose was not keeping good health for the past few years. He was admitted to a private hospital last evening. He breathed his last around 1 am today.
Tiruparankundram would witness a second by-election in two years as his predecessor S M Seenivelu, who was elected from the seat in the 2016 Assembly polls, died before taking oath as MLA.
Bose contested the by-poll to the Tiruparankundram seat and became MLA for the third time, earlier being in 2006 and 2011.
Bose, who joined the AIADMK as the youth wing leader and had served as party’s Madurai urban district secretary, had unsuccessfully contested for the Madurai Lok Sabha seat in the 2004 polls, before becoming MLA for the first time in 2006 when he was elected from Tiruparankundram.
In 2011, he was elected from Madurai North Assembly seat, but was denied ticket in the 2016 Assembly polls.
However, the death of Seenivelu enabled Bose to contest the by-poll and become MLA for the third time.
He was one of the fence-sitters when late chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s close aide V K Sasikala and T T V Dhinakaran were expelled from the party, before he decided to support Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.
He stirred a  hornet’s nest in August last year when he announced in Theni that he was in expelled leader Dhinakaran’s camp after meeting him in a private hotel.
However, hours later, after meeting Revenue Minister R B Udhayakumar in Madurai, he made a hasty retreat and said he was with the Palaniswami camp.
Bose had met Dhinakaran in Theni after attending a marriage and told the media that he was supporting him, following which Dhinakaran’s supporters claimed that the number of MLAs supporting them had increased and this was broadcast by TV channels.
However, after reaching Madurai and meeting the Revenue Minister Udayakumar, Bose declared that he was still supporting the EPS camp, at a press meet jointly organised with the Minister.
Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and their Cabinet colleagues and party functionaries were rushing to Madurai to pay their respects to Bose, whose last rites will be performed later in the evening.
