Karunanidhi health: Hospital says his condition suffers setback

Chennai: The medical condition of DMK president M Karunanidhi has suffered a decline, according to a medical bulletin from Kauvery Hospital, where he has been undergoing treatment for the last 10 days.

The bulletin was released this evening at 6.30, signed by Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, executive director, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai.

The bulletin said, “There has been decline in the medical condition of Kalaignar Dr M Karunanidhi ,” and added that maintaining his vital organ functions continues to remain a challenge considering his age-related ailments.

The hospital said his condition was being monitored continuously, and he was being treated with active medical support.

But what worried the hundreds of party cadres who had assembled in front of the hospital again this evening, was that “his response to the medical interventions over the next 24 hours will determine the prognosis”.

Even as the family members of Karunanidhi and the leaders of the DMK streamed back into the hospital from this evening, the number of cadres and well-wishers started swelling in front of the hospital again.

They had dispersed a few days ago, after seeing that his health was improving and there was information that he would soon return home. But today, with the hospital giving a 24-hour deadline for prognosis, the cadres are back.

Slogans like “Dr Kalignar Vazhga”, “Ezhundhu Vaa” have begun to rent the air again, raised by teary-eyed and emotionally charged cadres.
