Chennai: Despite rising population and a host of infrastructure works crippling routine life, Chennai has still clinched the second place when it comes to ease of living among metros.
Not only that, it has also bagged 14th place when it comes liveability among Indian cities, according to a report released by Central Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Monday.
Claiming an overall score of 47.24, Chennai has come behind Greater Mumbai by 10 points among metros with a population of more than four million.
Social factors such as education, health, safety and security boosted Chennai’s scores, while the city fared bad on physical factors like power supply, housing, open spaces and solid waste management.
In safety and security, it trumped Mumbai and New Delhi and came second to Hyderabad while it topped in the health sector among all metros.
While Pune, Navi Mumbai and Greater Mumbai were ranked India’s top three most liveable places, the national capital took the 65th place in the list of 111 cities.
Rampur in Uttar Pradesh figured at the bottom of the livability index.
In the top 10, apart from Maharashtra (three cities), Tirupati, Chandigarh, Thane, Raipur, Indore, Vijayawada and Bhopal are in the list. This is the first ever exercise undertaken by the Ministry to rank the country’s major cities on the basis of four parameters: Governance, social, economic and physical infrastructure.
The Ministry said evaluation of cities has been done on a 100-point scale across 78 indicators.
Releasing the index, Central Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the assessment is the first-of-its-kind globally in terms of scale and coverage and the ranking marks a shift to a data-driven approach to urban planning and management, besides promoting healthy competition among cities.
