Chennai: Residents of Prithvipakkam at Ambattur in the city want a wine shop present in their locality to down shutters permanently.
People have been subjected to problems due to tipplers, they say.
Banu, a resident, said,”It frankly has been a public nuisance. There is a school nearby and a temple as well. Students unfortunately have to cross the shop twice a day, from and towards the school, and everytime they do some problem or the other pops up.”
Banu said tipplers have made the area akin to dark places of a ghetto. She said people who come to the shop vomit, throw plastic on the street and also leave bottles on the road.
Residents had staged a demonstration already on the matter. “When associations of the area joined hands to stage a protest, we were confident that the shop would be evicted. However, no such thing has happened and two months have passed since,” said Banu.
As a last resort, RWAs of the area have reached out to the Collector, in the hope that things will finally be set right.
“We do not want anymore accidents to happen because of those miscreants. We also do not want school children to pick up the habit of drinking. Sometimes the shop is open even during days of national importance. It needs to be shut,” said another resident.
