Chennai: “Present-day students are mostly involved in theoretical learning and do not get practical training. This acts as a stumbling block when they seek jobs,” says newly-appointed Rotary Club of Chennai K K Nagar, president J N Harisharan.

Speaking to ‘News Today’, he explained about the club’s new project Ariviyal Araichi, reviving traditional games and projects to be taken up in the coming year.

“Our club is working towards providing quality education amongst the students and increase their intelligence by stimulating their thought process for building a stronger India. We have conceived a special programme – Ariviyal Araichi – which connects the academic curriculum with the experiments to enhance understanding of the concepts, thereby stimulating interest among students. The programme is devised with practical experiments in Physics and Chemistry so that they can learn the general science concepts better through these practical sessions,” Harisharan says.

The club in association with Kalpavriksha Seva Trust will conduct 50 free programmes this year in schools.

“We launched the first session at Holy Cross Higher Secondary School, Valasaravakkam, on 27 July. The students were interested in the concepts devised by our faculty member Shanmugam,” says the club president.

Ariviyal Araichi caters to class VII, VIII and IX standard students and around 50 of them will be accommodated per session. The programme will be held twice a week – Monday and Thursday. Interested schools can approach the club, says Harisharan.

On traditional games, he says Rotary Club of Chennai K K Nagar with other clubs wants to promote it in schools.

“Games like Pallankuzhi, Adupuli Attam, Thaya Kattai and Kallangai improves mental ability, mathematical and analytical skills of students. Neccesary kits will be given to schools and the district-level competition will be held on 11 November,” says Harisharan.

On projects to be taken up by the club, he says regular health camps will be conducted. Apart from it, construction of small township at Kuilkuppam near Mahabalipuram, restoration of village tank at Sriperumbudur and constructing community toilets will be taken up, he says.

A resident of Prajwal Diamond, New No 15, 51st Street, 9th Sector, K K Nagar, Harisharan can be reached at 98403 35370.

Kalpavriksha Seva Trust managing trustee Raghunathan Ramarao can be contacted at 97908 56066.
