Chennai: Following the city Commissioner’s recent order to install CCTV cameras on main roads and bridges, traffic police personnel in Chrompet in the city suburb have got down to installing four such monitoring devices on the MIT flyover in the locality.
According to a source from S13 Chrompet Police Station,”If an accident takes place in the night, it gets difficult for us to trace who hit whom. In such cases, these cameras would come handy as it gets easier for us to identify people.”
Along the main roads from Thiruneermalai to Tambaram, in association with shop owners and traders, 150 surveillance systems have been placed a few weeks ago, it is learnt.
“These would be functional 24/7 and are connected with the digital video recorders (DVR) set up in houses, bridges or shops nearby. The DVR, in turn, is linked to the Chrompet police station, where the monitoring officer would keep an eye on the devices,” he said.
In addition to the MIT bridge, Mappedu, which is classified as a school zone, is also getting four hi-tech cameras to keep the traffic flow and crimes under check.
“Once the assessment of prime accident and traffic areas in the jurisdiction is completed, we will be fixing additional devices to curb illegal activities,” he added.
Meanwhile, residents living in the vicinity have welcomed the move as they were increasingly worried about accidents along the GST Road in the past.
“As this stretch is the one that links Chennai with other major metros and cities nearby, investigating road mishaps were always arduous. Now that effective measures have been taken, I hope to see the cases getting resolved soon,” stated Santhanam, a resident of Chrompet.
