New Delhi: Justice Ranjan Gogoi was today sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India. He succeeds Justice Dipak Misra.

President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath to the 63-year-old Justice Gogoi at a brief ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan’s Darbar Hall.

Justice Gogoi will have a tenure of a little over 13 months and retire 17 November, 2019.

Justice Gogoi is the first Chief Justice of India from the northeast. As is the norm, Gogoi, the senior-most after former CJI Dipak Misra, was recommended by Misra and the appointment was then confirmed by President Kovind in September this year.

Justice Gogoi started his career as a permanent judge of the Gauhati High Court in February 2001. He went on to be transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2010 and was appointed Chief Justice there in 2011. He came to the Supreme Court as a judge 23 April 2012.

Speaking on Monday, Ranjan Gogoi said pendency of cases is bringing disrepute to the entire judicial system. He also said he has a plan to combat this problem.

He brushed aside claims that the system has not fared well and said despite odds, a number of judges are committed to the cause.
