Chennai: A tanker lorry carrying huge quantity of cash from Reserve Bank of India (RBI) broke down in the city creating traffic chaos for four hours.
According to sources, three container lorries carrying nearly Rs 2,000 crore reached the city from Mysore RBI. While two lorries reached the apex bank’s branch here safely, one vehicle broke down at Aminjikarai.
The container vehicle which was 40-feet stopped abruptly at 7.30 pm yesterday. CISF Jawans got out of the vehicle and stood around the lorry guarding it. Soon, a mechanic was brought to fix the issue.
The presence of the container with CISF personnel around it led to a traffic block on Poonamallee High Road with local residents and motorists gathering at the spot. Police and RBI officials arrived at the spot to take things under control.
It was later found that the clutch plate had jammed and it cannot be fixed. Eventually, the RBI office arranged for a vehicle which towed the tanker from the spot by 11.30 pm.
