Chennai:Ā Chucking off allopathy tablets and syringes, heliotherapy, colon hydrotherapy and mud therapy are the newfangled forms of cure. Yes, you heard it right. Quite a lot of people from the city are slowly shifting towards the ancient methods for a healthy life.
Government Yoga and Naturopathy Medical College and Hospitalās assistant professor Dr Y Deepa said it is quite evident that people, due to change in lifestyle, are missing out on sunlight that helps get Vitamin D, popularly known as sunshine vitamin, and also calcium absorption.
The minerals are essential for bone development and calcium also helps in preventing blood clot, aids heart contraction and teeth development.

“When a human exposes to sun during the rising and setting time, it activates the compound required for bone formation and synthesis of Vitamin D. The infra-red rays received from the natural source also circulates the blood and cures obesity, diabetes, hypertension and psychological disorders like Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia,” explains Dr Deepa.
She adds that the exposure time differs according to the pigmentation of the patient. People with fair skin, that has low melanin secretion, require up to 15-20 minutes of sunās rays whereas those with dark skin – where the body is highly protected by melanin compound – need to expose for a longer time.
She says, “In naturopathy, it is believed that a disease is contracted on accumulation of toxins and morbid matter in the body. Breeding of the micro-oraganisms disturb the general functioning of the physiology and disrupts blood flow and vitality.”
However, it causes additional trouble if the noxious substance gets accumulated in the large intestine. The practitioner says that it can be handled with colon hydrotherapy, which is becoming the talk of the town.
“The therapy helps in correcting overall human physiology including nervous system, digestive system and other vital systems and boosts immunity that prevents contraction of disease,” explains Dr Deepa.
She says diseases can be prevented if adults take this therapy once a year.
Explaining the procedure, the doctor adds: “The one-hour, whole body detox procedure involves the insertion of a tube into the rectum which will irrigate water into the colon that removes the old fecal matter, toxic substances and disease-causing bacteria from the intestine, thus cleaning the entire colon. Once clear water comes out, the therapy will be stopped.”

The patient who has taken colon hydrotherapy should be on a bland diet for a few days upon doctor’s advice.
Observing National Naturopathy Day 18 November, the Government Yoga and Naturopathy Medical College and Hospital in Arumbakkam hosted a seven-day programme, ending today, spreading awareness about a wide range of treatments.
Natural therapy is conducted on all days in the hospital that can be reached at 044 2622 2516.
