The civic body while constructing the bridges on Adyar river will see to it that the surrounding environment is not affected.

After nearly six months, the civic body has decided to construct two bridges in the neighbourhood.

According to sources, the bridges on Adyar river will connect Nesapakkam and Nandambakkam to reduce traffic congestion.

A public hearing was held at K K Nagar in May this year, where residents and officials from various departments participated.

The public were briefed about the benefits of the bridges by a civic body-appointed consultancy.

As of now, vehicles heading to Nandambakkam, Manapakkam pass through Nesapakkam, Bharathiyar Main Road, Kamaraj Salai, Ramapuram, Thiruvalluvar Salai and MGR Garden. This leads to heavy traffic at Ramapuram, St Thomas Mount and Poonamallee Highway.

According to the Corporation, Dr Kanu Nagar bridge, proposed at an estimated cost of Rs 73.45 crore, will reduce the distance between Nandambakkam and Nesapakkam by a kilometre from 3.4 km.

The Defence Colony bridge, proposed at an estimated cost of Rs 16.4 crore, will reduce the distance from 3.4 km to 2.1 km. The bridges will create connectivity between Anna Main Road at K K Nagar and Mount-Poonamallee Road in Nandambakkam.

The civic body has also decided that the bridges would be constructed using latest technology and not affecting the surrounding environment.

It may be noted that to handle the heavy traffic at Nesapakkam junction, the civic body opened a link road between Anna Main Road and Erikarai Road in August 2017.

The two-way,  200-metre stretch was constructed by VLUK Engineering at a cost of Rs 2,51,36,622.27, after Metrowater gave 4,644 sq m of its land for the project.
