Chennai: The installation of CCTV cameras has brought about change throughout Chennai for maintaining law and order, said city Police Commissioner A K Viswanathan.

He said this after inaugurating 1,200 CCTV cameras at Valasaravakkam today.

The city police under the leadership of Viswanathan are planning to instal 1 lakh cameras in the city, so that there is a camera every 15 metres. The police are planning to achieve this feat by joining hands with vendors and resident welfare associations in the city.

BEACH INSPECTION

Earlier in the day, Viswanathan along with Chennai Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan inspected Marina beach as directed by the Madras High Court.

The Police Commissioner said, “We are working with the Corporation and other departments to set up CCTV cameras. We will ensure watch towers are constructed soon.”

“About 75 CCTV cameras and 23 high-mast streetlights will be set up at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore with the help of Coastal Security Group,” he said.
