Chennai: The Southern Railway has requested passengers against the usage of inflammable items after an incident was brought to its notice.

According to a press release, some pilgrims traveling in the Hyderabad-Kollam special train performed poojas. They then went on to lit camphors as the train was nearing Coimbatore. Some clothes caught fire and went up in flames. Alarmed passengers then alerted the railway officials.

The minor mishap was brought under control, and the railway officials issued penalty against those who lit the camphors.

Keeping this in mind, the Southern Railway has come up with certain instructions that has to be followed. They are:

* Carrying inflammable objects like crackers, gas cylinders, acid, petrol, kerosene or any other inflammable article like camphor or lighting such products during a train journey is a punishable offense under the Railway Act 1989.

The offender is liable to be punished with fine and imprisonment up to three years.

* Railway officials also requested commuters that if they find any other passengers in possession of inflammable items, then railway staff including TTEs, coach attendants, train guards, station managers, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel should be alerted.

* Passengers can also file complaint through a helpline number – 182.
