The neighbourhood grapples with frequent power outages, and frustrated by this, Tansi Nagar Welfare Association has taken up the issue.

A petition has been filed asking for a new sub-station to be built in the locality to meet the increasing need for uninterrupted power supply.

Tansi Nagar Welfare association Secretary M Balakrishnan said the members met with MP J Jayavardhan, Tahsildar S Murugesan and several other Corporation officials to take up the matter. It is said, a committee will be set up soon to execute the plan.

“They were open to the proposal and agreed to take it forward. Now, the next step is to identify a land for building the sub-station and the officials are working on it,” said Balakrishnan. According to sources, there is a possibility of allotting a five ground property in Bhuvaneshwari Nagar.

“Over the years, the number of houses and commercial buildings at Velacheri has increased. Each house has multiple electric appliances running at any given time of the day. Increased consumption leads to power outages. The neighbourhood is developing. The current sub-station located at Velacheri is over 60 years old, and it is high time a new facility is built here. The cables too need to be replaced. Many interior areas in the neighbourhood still have over-head EB cables,” he adds.

It may be noted that recently, two employees suffered burn injuries due to a fire that broke out at the Tangedco substation located in Velacheri Main Road.

One of the equipment at the station caught fire leading to the accident. Because of this, several areas witnessed power cut for close to 14 hours; in the subsequent days too, many houses faced intermittent power cuts. Residents hope that this situation changes soon and for the better.
