Airports to have regional language announcements

Suresh Prabhu

Chennai: Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu has said the announcements at airports should be made in regional language first followed by Hindi and English.

Officials said that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has issued a directive to all aerodromes under its control.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has also sent out a communication to private airport operators regarding public announcements to be made in the local language.

The directions would not be applicable for silent airports, where public announcements are not made, they added.

The Minister’s decision came after representations from certain quarters that public announcements at airports should also made in the local language, they added.

It may be noted that the domestic terminal in Chennai airport is silent as announcements are not made.
