Chennai: The Police department was pleasantly surprised when Maoist Padma alias Sathyamary (43) surrendered before a Special Court at Poonamallee on 7 December.

However now, she has got the police and health officials baffled at the number of hospital visits she is making.

She has made three visits to the Government Stanley Hospital in a span of two weeks, complaining of chest pain. Even after the doctors examined, treated and sent her back, she returned with the same complaint.

Officials believe that Padma is simply taking the police for a ride and is possibly trying to get a bail from Court citing health issues.

A police source said, in less than a week of her arrest, she began complaining of chest pain and breathlessness.
During her fist visit to hospital, she was admitted for two days in the Convict Ward of Stanley and was discharged after doctors felt she was alright. But, within hours of her discharge, she complained of pain and was brought back to the hospital.

Few days ago, she was again ‘hospitalised’ with the same complaint. The police source added, “Every time she has to be brought to the hospital, a team of 10 police personnel is required and this includes an Inspector, a Sub-Inspector, four policewomen and a four policemen.”

When asked why the police feel that she was staging a ‘drama,’ the source said, “She was absconding for eight years and surprised everyone with a surrender. She is more free if she gets a bail, but it is difficult for her to get it. And we suspect she is trying to avail it citing health issues.”

A native of Hyderabad, Padma is a member of the CPI-Maoist ‘Fact Finding Team,’ she is the wife of CPI Maoist wing State Secretary, J Vivek aka Kumar. He is currently absconding.

She was initially arrested by the Madhikonpalayam police in 2002 for providing weapon training for a group of Maoists at Uthangarai in Krishnagiri district.

She was released and in 2017 and was again arrested by a Special Intelligence team of Andhra Pradesh police near Erode while she was travelling in a train from Kerala to Hyderabad. She managed to give the police the slip. She surrendered a year later.
