Chennai: In a bizarre case, two persons were detained for driving away a garbage truck belonging to the Chennai Corporation.
According to the police, on 6 Januray at 1.30 am, five persons in a SUV rammed against the garbage truck at Arya Gowda Street under the influence of alcohol.
Following this, the men picked up a quarrel with the truck driver Padmanaban. A resident of Ashok Nagar, Padmnabhan and his helper Ezhumalai were employed on a contract basis by garbage collecting agency.
The occupants of the car Gowtham (42), a resident of Porur and Bharath (36) from Kanchipuram who were in an inebriated condition picked up a fight with the duo.
They were employees of a travel agency on OMR and claimed the rear door of their vehicle was damaged and demanded that they be given Rs 5000 as compensation to repair the car.
The gang assaulted Padmanaban and Ezhumalai when they said they did not have money. The gang then drove away the truck. subsequently, Padmanaban lodged a police complaint.
The police used the CCTV footage from the spot and began an inquiry. They found out that the truck was parked outside Gowtham’s house in Porur.
The vehicle was seized yesterday and the duo were arrested under section 379 (theft) of the IPC and later remanded.
