Chennai: The famed Alanganallur jallikattu in Madurai district is on right now. Participants, sporting yellow jerseys, were seen participating with gusto.
Early reports say that 18 participants have been injured in the jallikattu. Of them, six have been rushed to Madurai Rajaji Government Hospital for further treatment.
According to reports, Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar’s three bulls are participating in the jallikattu. The bulls, named Vellai Komban, Chinna Komban and Sevalai Komban, are part of the huge number of bulls that are taking part in the bull-taming valour sport.
The jallikattu began at 8 am and will go on till 4 pm. In all, 1,400 bulls are to be let loose from the vadivasal of Alanganallur. There will be 848 valorous youth who will try to tame the bulls (madu pidi in Tamil).
Also, 1,500 police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order in Alanganallur. They are being overseen by seven SPs and 15 DSPs.
