The long-standing demand of the Mylapore residents for a direct bus service from Mylapore Tank to T Nagar was finally paid heed to as S39, a mini-bus was introduced this month.

The bus starts from T Nagar terminus on South Usman Road and plies through CIT Nagar, Nandanam, Teynmapet (Kavingar Bharathidasan Salai), Alwarpet and finally reaches Kapaleeshwarar temple tank.

“There is a normal bus 5B via T Nagar, Saidapet, Guindy, Adyar and Mandaveli. But this S39 provides connectivity to the tank and also connects important places with its route,” says Girija, a resident of Mylapore.

While many residents in Mylapore were happy with the service as it covers some important areas, the happiness was short-lived as the bus service was stopped last week.

There were no bus service from 16 January and this being the festive holiday, many people who planned a travel in the bus, were left irked.

Jai Ganesh, a resident of Mylapore said “I was very happy as soon as I came to know that new bus service was available from T Nagar to Mylapore Tank directly. I reside in Mylapore and wanted to visit my mother who is living in T Nagar, I decided to go by this bus for the first time after Pongal and waited at the bus stand for so long, only upon enquiring an MTC official that I came to know that the bus service was temporarily stopped,” he said.

When asked an MTC official, he said, there is only one bus currently plying in the route and it runs 14 times every day. Since the amount of passengers reduced drastically during the Pongal holidays, there were very few takers for the bus and because of that the service has been temporarily stopped. If we run during these days it will incur us a loss, he said assuring that the service will resume soon.
