Most of the residents living near St Mary’s Road at Alwarpet feels that the road is slowly turning into a parking lot as cars lined up on both the sides of the road cause trouble to the pedestrians.
VN Subramanian, president of the Mylapore Residents Welfare Association says, “Throughout the road, cars are parked and even a star hotel has converted the pedestrian pathway into a parking lot upon which no action has been taken so far. The cars have encroached nearly 10 to 15 feet on either side of the road.”
He also points out that the junction connecting St Mary’s Road, Chamiers Road and Mowbray’s Road has tuned an accident-prone zone ever since the St Mary’s Road was converted into a one-way.
“In this junction, the road gets narrower and with buses and cars plying in the route, the one-way adds confusion and has become an accident-prone zone.”
Also placed on the St Mary’s Road just near the intersection of CP Ramaswamy Road is a bin that according to motorists has to be moved from the place.
“The bin is placed very close to the road and cars and bikes turning in the road finds it as an obstruction. Also, the footpath is not in a good condition and with the bin placed so close to the road, the pedestrians find it very difficult to cross the junction and have to be very careful with each step,” says Sabari, a resident.
