Port Blair: Tremors were felt today in the Bay of Bengal near Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The earthquake, which occurred this morning at 1.51 am, measured 4.5 on the Richter Scale
It occurred around 219 km from the islands and located around 10 km below the sea bed. The Meteorological Department assured that there was no risk of tsunami formation.
Mild tremors were felt yesterday as well in some parts of Chennai city as an earthquake of moderate intensity, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, occurred in the sea.
Talking to reporters yesterday, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, RMD, S Balachandran, said the quake occurred at 7.02 am at a depth of 10 km in the sea over the central west Bay of Bengal and 600 km east of Chennai. He said the quake was recorded in the seismological centres at Chennai and Port Blair.
Following the quake, mild tremors were felt in some parts of Chennai and in the north Andaman areas. Balachandran said no tsunami warning was issued following the quake. “Since it happened in the sea, there was no damage,” he added.
A number of Chennaiites took to social media saying that they felt the mild tremors last morning.
