Chennai: A native of Thanjavur, senior advocate and resident of Virugambakkam, Subramanian, shared his love story. After schooling and college at Thanjavur, he settled down in Madras in a clerical job in Madras High Court. He completed four years of service and did his law course through evening college at the same time.
“I fell in love – though we were from different castes – and our courtship lasted more than five years. After the sudden demise of my father, my mother settled with me. When she broached the subject of marriage, I told her about my love for a girl and she reluctantly agreed,” he said.
One day, he told his girl that he will meet her father and ask for her hand. She readily agreed. But when he went to their house and broached the subject, he was asked to get out. “I became furious but told him firmly that if he was not going to agree we would conduct the wedding ourselves.”
Padmini, his wife, said her mother asked her to forget the affair. “One day, I left office and went along with my in-laws to Tirupati. I sent a telegram to my parents informing about it. All this happened on 21 March 1975. We are both still happy,” recalled Padmini.
Her parents, brother and sisters were introduced to her children in the late ’90s after he got a higher post and she became a magistrate.
