Krishna water entering Chennai.

Chennai: In what might come as a relief to Chennaiites fearing an acute water crisis this summer, Municipal Administration Minister S P Velumani today said the city will not face scarcity as 4 tmc ft of water from the Krishna river will reach the metropolis by April. He said all other districts in Tamilnadu are also ready to tackle water problems.

Velumani was answering questions raised by Leader of Opposition in the House, M K Stalin, in a special calling attention motion during Zero Hour in the Assembly.

Stalin demanded a white paper on the steps taken by the government to address the drinking water problems in the State.

“Groundwater level in 20 districts has gone down and there is no water in the lakes. What has happened to the desalination scheme?” he asked.

In response, Velumani said compared to what the DMK government did, more funds have been allotted for drinking water schemes during the AIADMK’s rule. He said Rs 158 crore has been allocated for Chennai alone.
