The inaugural carrom tournament conducted by Dr Ambedkar Carrom Club in Ambedkar Nagar, Chennai, saw the participation of 30 teams from various places of the city.
Arun, one of the coordinators, said, the team from Ayanavaram, bagged the first prize and teams from Chintadripet and Ramakrishnapuram, came second and third respectively.
Several rounds were conducted and teams were selected based on the best of three.
“The competition was held for two days and we are overwhelmed by the response that we received. All the rules and regulations of the tournament, were explained to the players beforehand, to ensure that the games were held in good spirit. Referees were appointed for each match and they helped in the smooth conduct of the event,” said Arun.
He further said, the club is planning to hold similar tournaments in the future as well, and added that the aim of conducting the contest, was to promote the game among today’s children.
“Most of the present generation youngsters do not go out and play. They are more addicted to online games. This might affect them psychologically and will also affect their physical health. Playing carrom will increase their focus and concentration. One wrong shot and the opponent might win. This will make youngsters think on their toes,” Arun added.
