Chennai: Sharon Rachel Aby Mathew, a 9-year-old student, studying class IV at Spartan Exclusive School, Mogappair, was appreciated for her brilliant and quick performance in the state-level chess tournament organised by the School Connects at T Nagar recently.
The tournament was open for players across Tamilnadu only and were played on Swiss League basis under the latest FIDE Rapid Rules. The competition saw the participation of more than 651 school students, 459 boys and 192 girls, participating in the Under-8, 9,10,12 and Under- 14 categories, a press release said.
Sharon Rachel, a differently-abled, is the only girl in the tournament to bag the special appreciation award and prize. The event which had participation from players of Chennai, Vellore, Kanchipuram, Tirunelveli, Tiruvallore and Salem districts concluded with 115 trophies and cash prizes were distributed for the top ranks. All the participants received participation certificates. The youngest players were awarded with special gifts and medals.
