Chennai: Tansi Nagar Welfare Association of Velacheri celebrated International Women’s Day in a special way by honouring 25 women sanitary workers employed by Ramkay to clean ward No. 179 of Chennai Corporation.
According to a press release from the association, the event was held Sunday around 12 noon at St Antony’s School. The women workers were tested at a medical camp and they were taught meditation.
A gift hamper consisting of saree, tiffin box and sweets was presented to them. They were also treated to a sumptuous lunch on the occasion.
The chief guest of the event was South Chennai MP, Dr J Jayavardhan. Executive engineer of zone 14, Thamizhazhagan, assistant engineer of ward 178, U Alamelu, Velacheri J7 police station inspector Tamilchelvi, Dr Sabarinath Ravichandar, Brahmakumari director Muthumani, St Antony’s Primary School headmistress, Sister Lourdes Amali, St Antony’s Higher Secondary School headmistress, Maria Jyothi, participated.
The speakers appreciated the work of the 25 women employed by Ramkay as they are on their toes from 7 am to 2 pm, clearing and cleaning 10 streets in the ward.
During the medical camp, it was found that as they are not provided protective gear, they are susceptible to infectious diseases. Due to work pressure, they have developed blood pressure, diabetes and lung infection, adds the press release.
We hope at least after this, for the safety of the workers, Ramkay and the Corporation of Chennai will provide them protective gear, said the release.
The association also appealed to the agencies to conduct regular medical camps for the benefit of the workers and pledged to help them in this regard.
