In a heartening initiative, a group of cricket veterans under the banner ‘Tamilnadu Cricket Veterans Association’ in T Nagar, has been organising charity programmes for the inmates of old-age homes and hospitals.
Speaking to this paper, P R Venkatasubramanian of the group, said, “We are a registered association of former cricketers and are affiliated to the Board for Veteran Cricket in India (BVCI), New Delhi. Our members participate regularly in the Veterans Cricket Tournaments conducted by the BVCI and the respective zonal associations in India.”
“We had emerged as winners of the South Zone tournament for seven seasons and also won three times at the All India knock out contest,” he added.
Since 2013, the members have been carrying out social service through cricket contacts and cultural programmes, donating the proceeds to old age homes and critically-ill patients.
“We do not approach sponsors for our activities and instead arrange for funds through the sale of donor passes to like-minded cricketers and well wishers,” he pointed out.
This year, the association will organise its annual charity programme on 10 March from 4.15 pm onwards at Infosys Hall, Ramakrishna Mission School Campus, Krishna Street.
About this, Venkatasubramaniam stated, “We coincided our event with the centenary year completion of legendary musicologist KV Mahadevan and songs from his tunes will be staged at the venue. A part of the sale proceeds will go to Vela Special School for Children, Villupuram.”
“Seasoned playback singers like Ananthu, Mukesh, Amruta, Janaki, SP Balasubramaniam, Ramu and Surmukhi are likely to part in the musical evening,” he noted.
