Chennai: The government will take steps to introduce gestational diabetes screening programme for pregnant women, said Tamilnadu Health Secretary Beela Rajesh.
She was speaking at the seventh edition of DAISICON, a one-day summit on gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) jointly hosted by Diabetes Association of India – southern chapter (DAI-SC) and Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society of Southern India (OGSSI) here recently.
The conference saw senior diabetologist Dr V Seshaiah receiving the ‘Lifetime achievement award’ for his service in the field of diabetology in the presence of Medical Education Director Edwin Joe, Diabetes Association of India secretary Dr N Rajendran, Dr D Shantharam and Dr Lakshmi Narayanan.
Edwin Joe stated that a diploma course on diabetes will be introduced in all medical colleges. “The summit discussed pre-pregnancy diabetes counselling, fertility and sub-fertility in women with diabetes, epidemiology of GDM in Indian scenario, etiopathogenesis of GDM, endocrine disorders in pregnancy diabetes,” said organising secretary Dr I Periyandavar and treasurer Dr A Panneerselvam.
The association is actively involved in imparting patient education, nurses education and creating awareness among public about the significance of early diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and its complications.
