2019 polls: Several kg gold & silver, Rs 12.60 crore cash seized in AP


Amaravati: Ahead of the 11 April elections, Rs 12.60 crore in cash and several kilograms of gold and silver, besides other items have been seized across Andhra Pradesh since 10 March.

Chief Electoral Officer Gopal Krishna Dwivedi speaking at a press conference said that the police flying squad has also confiscated 2.08 litres of liquor worth Rs 7.35 crore. 220 FIRs have been registered. Rs 2.39 crore in cash, 8.026 kg gold and 22 kg of silver, all worth Rs 2.33 crore were also seized by the flying squad.

Special teams have been deployed to scrutinize the content on social media and so far 89 notices were issued to the three main political parties for various posts on the social media in violation of the model code of conduct.

Rs 7.51 crore in cash, 128.16 kg gold worth Rs 1.80 crore, 18.46 kg silver worth Rs 2.56 lakh and other material, including cell phones and dress material, worth Rs 1.45 crore were seized by the police static surveillance teams, while other police teams seized Rs 3.83 crore in cash and other items valued at Rs 84 lakh, informed the CEO.

The Income Tax authorities had also seized Rs 2.69 crore in cash and 39.1 kg silver across the State. Over 10 lakh applications for registration of new voters have to be verified while 1,55,099 votes related to cases of death and duplication were removed added Dwivedi.

“We have received 15 lakh applications after 11 January, till 15 March, for registration of new voters. While there are 3.84 crore voters in Andhra Pradesh now, the number may go up to 3.95 crore after inclusion of new voters. We will issue photo identity cards to new voters by 5 April,” he said.

He further warned that the MCC was applicable to election staff as well and those guilty of violation would be removed from service, besides legal action.
