Madipakkam Lake Walkers Club, a community-based forum in Chennai, has installed compact garbage bins made of steel on EB poles present at Lake View Main Road.
The club that was formed recently took this step to ensure that walkers and lake vistors would drop garbage in the bins rather than litter the lake.
Subramani, who co-founded the forum, told News Today that it was the joint effort of residents, Lions Club members and walkers club members to install wire baskets, figure of eight for walkers and benches at the newly-laid walkers path.
“The main idea of installing these baskets is to protect the rejuvenated lake from getting ruined again. Madipakkam lake is a hub for many, who come her everyday to enjoy and relax. Among hundreds, who visit the waterbody, only a few ensure that they discard the waste in the bins. Many others throw waste on the platforms or in the lake itself. By installing bins on the EB poles, we believe that we have taken the right direction to control contamination at the lake,” he said.
When asked about the figure eight the walkers club installed there, he said, “The figure of eight is for the walkers. Walking on the pattern benefits the walker and they will stay healthier.”
